Prime Minister, Kassim Fate has called on government institutions that use wood and charcoal in bulk as well as schools and hosts begin effective strategies to change the approach to cooking and put gas stoves to reduce the use of coal that had been the source of environmental damage.

He said this yesterday in Dar es Salaam in a speech read on his behalf by the Minister of Natural Resources and Tourism, Professor Jumanne Maghembe at the opening of a workshop of stakeholders to discuss the best ways and means of reducing the use of coal for the sustainable management of the environment.

"I am being told that cartels stoves and cooking gas LPG kind of have shown willingness to put these stoves without any cost. Send us news of our vessels and platforms of meetings to encourage people to use this opportunity to LPG, "said the Prime Minister.

In addition, he said the country is facing serious challenges of environmental degradation due to various factors, including the raising of livestock, livestock roamed the forests and destroy it with water sources and people cutting trees in these sources.

He said climate change has led to changes in periods of rain, the distribution of rainfall and thus threaten food security and lack of raw materials for industries that is the way the country entered into recession brought me through the medium.

He said statistics show 90 percent of energy for cooking especially urban charcoal and rural high percentage and citizens are using wood where those figures also show that producing one ton of coal equivalent and sacks 30 needed 12 tons of fuel and this has led to the country losing more 370,000 hectares annually.

He said the survey also noted that the use of coal is increasing due to population growth and it will take effect as renewable energy sources, demand for coal will reach about five million tonnes a year by 2030 from 2.4 million tons used in 2015.

However, Professor Maghembe said his ministry intends to raise tariffs and taxes of charcoal to be sold at a higher price the aim is to make transporters and buyers failing to afford and eventually decrease the use of coal.
